Six arrested over unlicensed firearms in weekend police operations

Six suspects were arrested in separate incidents over the weekend for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the Kunene and Khomas regions.

In one incident at Okongo village on Friday, two Namibian men aged 40 and 44 were arrested during a police operation.

The suspects were found in possession of a .306 hunting rifle with its serial number scratched off, along with six rounds of live ammunition. Police allege that the firearm had been used for hunting rhinos at a private farm in the Kamanjab area.

The suspects face charges including possession of a firearm without a licence, supplying unauthorised firearms and ammunition, and unlawful possession of ammunition. Police investigations in the matter are ongoing.

In a separate incident in Windhoek’ Greenwell Matongo area , four suspects aged 22, 36, 42 and 43 were arrested on Saturday at around 22h00 along Winnie Mandela Road.

The suspects were searched by police and found in possession of an unlicensed pistol with a faded serial number, one round of live ammunition, and two knives.

They face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of a dangerous weapon. Police investigations continue.
