Police in the Omusati Region have reported two separate accidents involving donkey carts over the last two weeks.

According to police regional commander, commissioner Ismael Basson, 28-year-old Wilbard Raphael Shithigona lost his life after his donkey cart hit a tree stem and overturned on the two occupants at Otamanzi on Sunday.

Basson said a female passenger who was with him survived with minor injuries.

In a separate incident four people were rushed to the hospital with minor injuries, after an unlicensed driver of an Isuzu double cab hit a donkey cart from behind between Tsandi and Ongulumbashe road earlier this month, causing it to overturn.

Basson added all four occupants were treated and released; however, all three donkeys died on the spot.

Police urge all road users to remain vigilant, especially at night, and remind vehicle owners that driving without a valid license is a serious crime that puts lives at risk.
