The University of Namibia (Unam) hosted its graduation ceremony for its northern campuses on Wednesday.

Over students 900 from the Jose Eduardo Dos Santos campus, Hifikepunye Pohamba campus, Oshakati campus and Ogongo campus, graduated in different fields of study and were conferred with certificates, diplomas, honour’s and master’s degrees.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Unam vice chancellor, Professor Kenneth Matengu, said this year’s graduation saw an increase in the number of boys graduating compared to last year.

“I have always been complaining, not too much but just a little bit about the dominance of the girl child and now everyone is on watch, last year we had more than 70 percent of all our graduates being female, however I am therefore, pleased to say this year the number of boys participating in higher education in terms of graduates has increased by five percent,” Matengu said.

He added a boy child needs to be encouraged and motivated to take bigger steps in shaping their future.

Matengu said the Institution will continue to deliver on its mandate and spoke about the introduction of the Welding Engineering School at the Jose Eduardo Dos Santos Campus which he believes is a milestone in engineering education and industrial skills development on the continent.

He further said another achievement is the newly rolled-out Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP) 2025-2030, which focuses on societal transformation and global competitiveness.
