A 26-year-old female Angolan national is expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court this week for allegedly kidnapping a one-year-old boy near Okahao District Hospital on Tuesday.

Police say the woman had allegedly told her boyfriend that she was expecting a child.

According to Omusati region commander, Commissioner Ismael Basson, the boy’s mother, also an Angolan national, met the suspect at the hospital, where they exchanged contact details before leaving together.

Basson said while walking, the mother realised that one of the baby’s shoes was missing. She asked the suspect to hold the baby while she went back to search for it.

However, upon returning, both the suspect and the baby were nowhere to be found.

Basson said the mother immediately called the suspect, who initially answered and claimed she was waiting nearby, but later switched off her phone.

The mother alerted the police and joined the search. The suspect and the baby were eventually traced to Omapopo village in the Oshana Region, where she is employed as a domestic worker.

The baby was found unharmed.
