38th Nedbank Cycle Challenge launched

The 38th edition of the Nedbank Cycle Challenge was officially launched at a press conference held at the Nedbank Campus in Windhoek on 30 January.

 

Dubbed ‘the greatest ride under the sun’ the Nedbank Cycle Challenge is one of the oldest sporting events in the country. Since its debut in 1986, the race has grown in popularity among cycling aficionados and multitudes of cyclists race each year in the hopes of being crowned champion.

 

This year, the race will take place on Sunday, 11 February. Cyclists will have the option of taking part in 20 km, 30 km, 60 km, or 100 km racecourses. The starting point will be the Nedbank Campus on the corner of Fidel Castro Street and Rev Michael Scott Street, and the race will end on Independence Avenue in front of the Zoo Park.

 

Speaking at the press conference was Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Honourable Agnes Tjongarero, who said: “This event brings together individuals from all walks of life, uniting them in a shared passion for cycling. The theme “Greatest ride under the sun”, encapsulates this challenge. This race is not just a display of physical competency, it’s also a celebration of the human spirit and the pursue of excellence” she said.

 

The Honourable Minister expanded on how crucial this race is for both seasoned and novice cyclists.

 

“I encourage participants to embrace the true spirit of sportsmanship and fair play throughout the Nedbank Cycle Challenge. This event is not solely about winning or losing, it’s about the personal growth which comes with taking part in the Nedbank Cycle Challenge,” the Minister said.

 

In her conclusion, she thanked the organising teams and the cyclists who will make this edition of the Nedbank Cycle Challenge one for the books.

 

In his official remarks, Nedbank Namibia Chief Operating Officer, Victor Ashikoto, stated: “Nedbank Namibia actively and intentionally seeks to do good in the communities we serve, and as such, the bank takes immense pride in its role in growing this sport across the nation. This year, we once again extend our warmest welcome to paraplegic athletes who will inspire us with their determination and compete in three different categories. Their presence reinforces the idea that cycling knows no bounds and that, indeed, it is a sport for everyone. For 38 years, Nedbank Namibia has been at the forefront of cycling’s growth in Namibia, consistently supporting and nurturing remarkable new talent. Our dedication has contributed significantly to establishing Namibia as a formidable cycling nation within Africa,” Ashikoto said.
