Namibia’s Presidential Succession Raises Questions

todayFebruary 19, 2024 9

Background
share close

Following Nangolo Mbumba’s swearing-in as president on February 4th, questions have emerged regarding whether he is the acting or fourth president of Namibia. Mbumba assumed the position after the passing of President Hage Geingob on the same day. The issue has sparked discussions on social media, despite Mbumba being the fourth person to take the oath to act or serve as president. Namibia faced this situation a decade after amending the Constitution to include the vice president position. Lawyer Kadhila Amoomo points to the relevant constitutional articles and asserts that Mbumba was lawfully sworn in as the fourth president of the country.
