Omaheke ready for newspaper cup

Regional Councillor for the Otjinene Constituency, Erwin Katjizeu, also chairperson of the committee organising the 2024 Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup in the Omaheke Region on Wednesday said they are almost done with all preparations to host the tourney.
“When we were told that we will be hosting this cup here this year and I am the chairperson I wondered how this was going to be possible, but today I proudly want to thank all the stakeholders involved in the organisation of this cup,” he said in an interview with Nampa.
“I should thank the Office of the Omaheke Region Governor and the Gobabis Municipality for bringing all stakeholders together. What I can tell you today is that before we begin with our preparation we did not have enough resources like we only had one netball court and now as you can see we have two beautiful netball courts,” he emphasised.
Katjizeu highlighted that over recent weekends, Omaheke attracted big sport events like the game between Young African and Eeshoke Chula Chula which saw a sizeable crowd, but was optimistic that this tournament will bring more people to the region, and thus urged Omaheke residents to be ambassadors of their region.
The chairperson furthermore pointed out that they selected 50 SMEs from the region for the event, and according to him this will improve the region’s economy. This is besides the improved infrastructural development the region will be left with after the four-day tourney.
This agency also met with the netball team to see how ready they were to host the other 13 regions heading to Omaheke over the weekend.
Head coach of the Omaheke regional netball team Paavanga Tjihuro said they are ready to keep the trophy in Omaheke.
“We will face Khomas in our first game and the girls are ready, these people have been training for more than three weeks and you can tell from the spirit of the girls that they are ready to beat any team they will face during the tourney,” Tjihuro expressed.
