Pupkewitz Megabuild Tour de Windhoek 2024 launched

The seventh edition of the Tour de Windhoek was officially launched in the capital on Thursday, with organisers expecting to welcome teams from five countries for this year’s competition.
Revamped in 2022 during its fifth edition, the race will take place from 02 to 05 May 2024. The six-stage race will once again see male riders cover 428.7 kilometres (km) over four days, while the women’s category will cover 210 km.
Speaking to Nampa after the launch, Namibia Cycling Federation president, Axel Theissen said the federation and organisers of the event have been in talks with other countries as they want to grow the race to an international event.
“We are hopeful that countries like South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Eswatini and Lesotho will join us for this year’s event. Our goal is to grow this competition to one day become an international tour,” he said.
Meanwhile, Joseph Uapingene, Deputy Mayor for the City of Windhoek, who spoke at the same occasion, expressed pride in the city, for hosting such an unforgettable road race across its beautiful capital.
“The Tour de Windhoek not only showcases our passion for sports but also highlights Windhoek’s commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among our residents and visitors alike,” he said.
He added that cycling holds a special place in the hearts of many Namibians and the Tour de Windhoek celebrates this universal love for cycling.
“The Tour de Windhoek brings together athletes from all corners of our country, and the globe, to compete in our vibrant city streets and scenic landscapes. During recent years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tour de Windhoek had limited international teams participating, but this year I am told, we are very hopeful to have more than five different nations participating,” said Uapingene, who stated that having many countries partaking in the tour will go a long way in promoting Windhoek, and Namibia, as a favoured tourist destination.
The Deputy Mayor of Windhoek also expressed his desire to have the race included in the International Cycling Union’s international cycling calendar after the successful staging of this year’s event.
