Namibia’s T13 sprinter Johannes Nambala on Monday missed out on a medal after finishing in sixth place in the T13 100 meters (m) final at the World Para Athletics Championships underway in Kobe, Japan.

The 2024 World Para Athletics Championships are being held at the Universiade Memorial Stadium in that country, with 11 para-athletes and seven guides representing Namibia.

Nambala, Namibia’s T13 sprinter, qualified for the final of the T13 100m on Sunday after running a season-best time of 11.46 seconds, which saw him finish fourth in heat two and seventh overall.

In the evening session on Monday, the Namibian sprinter finished sixth in the final. The race was won by Skander Djamil Athmani of Algeria, who set a championship record of 10.44 seconds.

Nambala once again ran a season-best time of 11.29 seconds, but it was not enough to earn him a place on the podium.

The podium places went to Athmani, home favourite Shatu Kawakami who finished second with a new Asian record time of 10.70 seconds, and world record holder Salum Kashafali of Norway who took bronze in a time of 10.79 seconds.

Another Namibian athlete still expected to compete on the day is T12 sprinter Lahja Ipinge and her guide Paulus Filippus who will run in the heats two of the T12 400m.
