today21 May, 2024

Background

A new opinion poll in South Africa shows that the party founded by former President Jacob Zuma, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, will become the third largest party after the May 29 elections. The poll, according to Bloomberg Africa predicts that the African National Congress will win 43.4% of the national vote, the Democratic Alliance 18.6%, and the MKP 14.1%. However, South Africa’s Constitutional Court has ruled that Jacob Zuma is not eligible to contest the elections for a seat in the National Assembly.

The AFP news agency further reports that South Africa’s constitutional court found Zuma’s 15-month jail sentence for contempt of court in 2021 disqualified him from standing in the May 29 election, as the constitution prohibits anyone given a prison sentence of 12 months or longer from holding a parliamentary seat.
