Namibian youth urged to partake in SDGs

The Active Youth Organisation (AYO) held an event titled Pathway to Impact themed, ‘Youth for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ at the Be Free Youth Campus in Katutura on Wednesday.

The event was aimed at inspiring young Namibians to take part in efforts to localise and reach the 17 SDGs by the year 2030.

During the event, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila highlighted some of the government commitments towards achieving the SDGs, while urging young people to advocate for change.

Amadhila described the SDGs as a global call to action to end poverty and protect the earth’s environment and climate, as well as to ensure that people around the world can enjoy peace and prosperity.

“In efforts to promote youth employment in Namibia, the government has adopted the framework of youth internship in Government to capacitate graduates with the practical skills and experiences they’ll need,” said Amadhila.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Deputy Resident Representative, Christian Shingiro urged young people to be curious about the positive changes that can be brought about.

“Doing nothing is a very costly decision and achieving SDGs is way beyond just one person. Young people have the power to tell the story of where we come from and where we aspire to be by the year 2030,” he said.

The event was packed with young students and entrepreneurs who were given the platform to share their opinions in making impactful decisions.

The next Pathway to Impact event is expected to take place in Groot Aub as a way of educating every Namibian on the importance of practicing SDGs.
