Nersa, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, has given the go-ahead for a new national free basic electricity rate of 194.40 cents per kilowatt-hour, set to take effect from the beginning of the next month. This rate will dictate how municipalities compensate Eskom for providing essential electricity services to qualifying households, covering necessities like lighting and water heating. In response to changing economic conditions, Nersa is also reevaluating the current 50 kilowatt-hours monthly allowance. This decision reflects Nersa’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to vital services while adapting to the dynamic economic landscape of South Africa.
