Katutura community activist, Shaun Gariseb has voiced strong opposition to the recent constituency boundary demarcation proposals in the Khomas Region, criticizing the lack of proper consultation and transparency. Speaking at a press conference, Gariseb outlined the events of the delimitation commission’s consultations on June 13, where he and other concerned residents sought to present their views.

Gariseb noted that, despite being promised a chance to speak, he was ignored during the proceedings. He expressed concerns about a pre-determined map of the region’s boundaries and questioned the legitimacy of the consultation process. According to Gariseb, the consultations were poorly conducted, with only a handful of residents being consulted, most of whom were CDC members, rather than a representative sample of the population.

The activist highlighted that the traditional authority of the /Khomanin people and other community groups were excluded from the discussions. He criticized Governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua for claiming that consultations were completed and documented, despite evident gaps in community engagement.

In response to these issues, Gariseb and other local leaders have organized a meeting on June 23 at the Dolam playground to mobilize the community and plan their formal submission to the commission. He stressed that they would bypass the governor’s office and submit their concerns directly to ensure their voices are heard.

Gariseb’s call for action underscores the community’s demand for genuine consultation and respect for traditional authorities in the demarcation process, reflecting a broader struggle for inclusion and fair representation in regional decision-making.
