The 13th edition of the Agra Weaner Championship Series kicked off on 09 July, sparking excitement among cattle farmers nationwide. Sanlam is proud to sponsor N$75,000 towards the project, which began its auctions in Karasburg and will continue to Grootfontein. This project provides a prestigious platform for producers to showcase their exceptional work. Additionally, four auctions will be held in the communal areas of Aminus, Okondjatu, Talismanus, and Okakarara, aiming to engage and uplift these emerging regions.

The Agra Weaner Championship Series has a dual purpose: to build capacity within participating communities and to honour top producers for their outstanding achievements. This esteemed series not only provides a significant cash flow boost to numerous cattle farmers but also incentivises excellence in weaner quality. By participating in this prestigious series, producers have the opportunity to measure and compare their production standards and management practices on a national scale.

According to the latest data from the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), the farming and agriculture industry in Namibia contributes approximately 5% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is a significant source of employment, providing jobs to around 20-30% of the population. The agricultural sector is vital for the livelihoods of many Namibians, especially in rural areas, and plays a crucial role in ensuring food security and supporting the overall economy.

“Sanlam is committed to improving the livelihoods of Namibian people and will continue to support initiatives and industries such as this, which empower farmers and community members with the skills to navigate challenging times such as drought. This year, drought has been declared a state of emergency by the Government of Namibia—the worst drought the country has experienced in 100 years. Sanlam’s support of the Agra Weaner Championship Series underscores our dedication to providing farmers with the knowledge and resources they need to produce quality cattle and implement effective management practices during difficult periods,” stated Wessel Kotze, Sanlam Key Account Specialist: Affluent Market Agency.

The Agra Weaner Championship Series epitomises inclusivity and highlights the exceptional quality of Namibian cattle production. Achieving recognition in this competition requires an unwavering commitment to excellent farming and management practices. In addition to recognising the top performers in each category, the series also acknowledges the contributions of buyers. Prizes are awarded for the highest amount spent during the series and the largest total number of animals purchased throughout the auctions.
