Bangladesh interim government to be sworn in

today8 August, 2024

Background

Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Muhammed Yunus has officially been sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, succeeding former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after weeks of violent protests led mainly by students.

Aljazeer reports that upon his return to Bangladesh on Thursday from an overseas trip, Yunus was greeted at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by the country’s military chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, along with leaders from the navy and air force, and some of the students who were instrumental in the uprising against Hasina.

He was later sworn in at the presidential palace in Dhaka, in the presence of Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin, foreign diplomats, civil society representatives, prominent business figures, and members of the former opposition party.

A long-time critic of Sheikh Hasina, Yunus was nominated for the interim leadership role by the student protesters. He will serve as the interim chief advisor to the president, a position equivalent to that of a prime minister.
