A tragic boat accident occurred on Lake Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday, with a vessel carrying 278 passengers capsizing and sinking. Duetche Welle reports that the South Kivu Governor Jean-Jacques Purusi reported that 78 people have been confirmed dead so far, as quoted by both Reuters and the Associated Press. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the full extent of the disaster remains unclear. Purusi indicated that more details on the situation will be available by tomorrow, as authorities work to provide updates on those still missing. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
