HAVANA, CUBA – Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi, accompanied by members of the National Assembly, met with a group of 10 Namibian students out of 33 studying various careers at Universidad Marta Abreu de Villa Clara in the Republic of Cuba on Sunday.

The Speaker is currently in Cuba, leading a multi-party parliamentary delegation on a week-long official visit from 20 to 26 October 2024.

Hon. Prof. Katjavivi and his delegation had the opportunity to engage and motivate the students in Villa Clara Province, connecting with the future leaders of our country. Speaking to the students, Hon. Prof. Katjavivi said, “Education is a transformative force. Your time here in Cuba not only represents personal development but also serves as an investment in the future of Namibia. The knowledge and skills you acquire will be essential as you contribute to our nation.”

“Cuba is renowned for its rich history, culture, and dedication to education. You are lucky to gain a new perspective that will broaden your understanding of the world,” Hon. Prof. Katjavivi said.

He added, “This experience is also about cultural exchange. Take the opportunity to learn from the Cuban people and their customs. These connections can lead to lasting friendships and mutual appreciation.”

The Speaker stated, “As students, you play a crucial role in nation-building. Your education will empower you to address the challenges facing Namibia and promote positive change in your communities.”

“We urge you to engage actively in your studies and community initiatives. Your voices are important, and your participation in social and political matters is vital for the progress of our democracy,” Hon. Prof. Katjavivi said.

One of the students, Willy Losper, who is studying for a Master’s degree in Architecture, expressed his gratitude for being selected to study in Cuba.

Losper said, “We are honoured to be greeted by the Speaker with his delegation from Namibia. He spoke about the struggle that Cuba went through to help free Namibia. We feel very honoured and grateful that he was there to give us a sense of home and pride.”

“He (the Speaker) told us about how we should go back to Namibia and take along the skills and knowledge we will acquire here,” he added.

He continued, “We were selected by the Ministry of Works and Transport and were divided into three groups to study different career paths. We believe that at the end of the road, we will go back and give back to Namibia.”
