13/11/2024, WINDHOEK, Namibia – The Basic Income Grant (BIG) Coalition of Namibia is hosting the Universal BIG Star Rally on Saturday, November 16, 2024. The rally will begin with a march at 14:00 from the Miami Service Station Bus Stop in Katutura to UN Plaza via Independence Avenue. The march will be accompanied by the Champion Brass Band. The rally is scheduled to start at 15:00 at UN Plaza in Katutura, featuring entertainment from Namibian artists.

The Purpose of the Rally:

  • To clarify the differences between the current conditional BIG and the universal/unconditional BIG to minimize confusion among the public.
  • To emphasize the importance of a universal BIG in addressing widespread poverty, unemployment, and income inequality.
  • To hold political parties accountable for their stance on a universal BIG.
  • To highlight government actions that undermine the BIG Coalition’s campaign.

The theme of the rally is “Let’s all benefit from our resources through a Basic Income Grant for all.” The BIG Coalition believes that a universal BIG is essential for supporting all vulnerable people, especially as Namibia is classified as a major hunger hotspot in the world by the Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The concept of BIG must remain free from political manipulation, and government should ensure that it is not confused with other conditional grants, to maintain public trust.
