Sub-Saharan Africa faces challenges in birth registration, says UNICEF

todayDecember 16, 2024 9

Background
share close

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund has reported that 80% of children under five were registered globally in the past five years but 150 million children remain unregistered, with over half in sub-Saharan Africa. While countries like Botswana and Côte d’Ivoire have made progress, barriers such as high costs, discrimination, and weak political commitment continue to hinder progress, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
