Namibia retains AGOA eligibility

today7 January, 2025

Background

The United States has confirmed that Namibia will retain its eligibility for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) benefits in 2025, alongside 31 other African nations. The announcement follows an annual review process by the US Trade Representative (USTR), including a July public hearing to assess compliance with AGOA’s criteria.

AGOA is a trade agreement that promotes economic growth and development in sub-Saharan Africa by providing eligible countries with tariff-free access to the US market for over 6,400 products. Namibia has been a beneficiary of this programme, with significant opportunities to expand its exports under the arrangement.

Minister of Industrialisation and Trade, Lucia Iipumbu, highlighted the importance of AGOA in boosting the country’s economic growth through increased trade with the United States.

The decision reinforces Namibia’s position as a reliable trade partner and provides a pathway to further enhance economic ties between the two nations.
