China is fighting the rapid spread of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory illness with symptoms resembling Covid-19. The outbreak is straining the country’s healthcare system as the virus continues to mutate.

Dr. Bernard Haufiku, former Health Minister, advised standard precautions such as avoiding crowds, wearing masks during travel, and strengthening surveillance systems. “Airplanes are sites for virus spread, so we must stay alert,” Haufiku said, emphasizing the need for public health vigilance.

Meanwhile, in a media release dated 8 January 2024, the Ministry of Health and Social Services said that, based on World Health Organisation guidance, it does not recommend travel or trade restrictions with China. The Ministry assured the public that the rise in respiratory infections does not currently constitute a public health emergency of international concern.

The Ministry urged calm, emphasizing the importance of relying on verified information and avoiding unnecessary panic. Local health authorities pledged to monitor the situation closely via surveillance networks and provide timely updates.
