Namibia in talks with OPEC over possible future membership

Namibia could one day become a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), according to Secretary General Haitham al-Ghais. Speaking during a media briefing, al-Ghais revealed that the organisation is currently in discussions with several African nations regarding potential membership, naming Namibia as one of the countries with significant potential.

This comes as Namibia gears up for its first offshore oil production, expected to begin by 2030, following a series of oil discoveries off the country’s coast. Last year, OPEC expressed interest in exploring strategic collaboration with Namibia, recognising the country’s emerging status as a future oil producer.

Economist Dr. Omu Kakujaha-Matundu from the University of Namibia cautioned that while OPEC membership could offer economic opportunities, it also carries complex political and regulatory implications.

“Namibia will need to carefully consider the benefits against the obligations that come with joining such a powerful oil bloc,” he said.

Namibia’s involvement in OPEC would mark a major milestone in its journey to becoming a key player in global energy markets.
