A 10-year-old boy from the Ileni location in Keetmanshoop is in critical condition after being electrocuted on Friday.

According to a police crime report, the incident happened when the boy was holding onto an electric fence as a fire broke out in a nearby room containing an electrical box. The flames spread to an adjacent room and severely damaged the power cables supplying electricity from a nearby pole to the building.

“It is alleged that the victim was holding onto an electric fence when a hanging cable caught fire due to the outbreak,” the police statement said.

The boy was initially rushed to the Keetmanshoop State Hospital by the fire brigade. He was later transferred to Windhoek in critical condition, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
