EU commits N$13 million to support Angra Point Port expansion

The European Union has committed N$13 million to support the expansion planning of the Lüderitz Port at Angra Point, strengthening Namibia’s ambitions to become a key player in global green shipping and renewable hydrogen exports.

The agreement, signed between the EU, the Port of Rotterdam, and Namport was concluded during the closing session of the EU’s Africa Regional Workshop on Global Gateway Green Shipping Corridors held last week in Walvis Bay.

The announcement follows an International Maritime Organisation workshop, also supported by the EU, which convened stakeholders from 30 African maritime authorities to discuss the development of green shipping routes essential for reducing emissions and protecting climate-vulnerable communities.

EU Ambassador to Namibia, Ana Beatriz Martins, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to sustainable, mutually beneficial industrial development.

This initiative builds on previous EU-funded cooperation between Port of Antwerp–Bruges International and Namport, which produced a master plan for expanding the Port of Walvis Bay, a project with the potential to unlock N$10 billion in investment.

Both the Lüderitz and Walvis Bay port development plans aim to strengthen strategic trade routes between Africa and Europe, positioning Namibia as a future green logistics hub and a key gateway in global green maritime corridors.
