Germany commits N$876 million to support Green Energy in Namibia

today17 November, 2025

By: Hertha Ekandjo

The German government has committed 43.8 million euros, about N$876 million to support Namibia’s priorities in green energy, vocational training, sustainable urban development, and natural resource management under the National Development Plan 6.

The funding was confirmed during inter-governmental negotiations held last week in Lüderitz, where both governments agreed to deepen their 35-year development partnership.

According to a joint communique by the two governments, a significant portion of the support will go towards Namibia’s clean energy transition, with Germany assisting efforts to expand electricity access from the current 59% to 70% by 2030 and to reach universal access by 2040.

The investment will strengthen planning, decentralised energy infrastructure, and value chains for critical raw materials needed for the green transition.

Speaking during the Namibia-German Development Cooperation Negotiations, the National Planning Commission`s Director General, Kaire Mbuende, said the negotiations provided an opportunity not only to review progress, but also to realign the two nations cooperation to Namibia’s current and emerging priorities under the Sixth National Development Plan, which defines the vision for a prosperous, inclusive, and climate-resilient Namibia.

Germany will also continue backing technical and vocational education and training, focusing on labour-market-aligned skills, youth inclusion, and training in sectors linked to renewable energy. This aligns with Namibia’s TVET policy reforms.

Since Namibia’s independence, Germany has provided more than €1.6 billion (N$32 billion) in development cooperation, across around 60 active projects implemented through KfW, GIZ and BGR.
