Capricorn Group, Capricorn Foundation, and Bank Windhoek Unite for Namibia’s COP28 Pavilion

The Capricorn Group, in collaboration with the Capricorn Foundation and Bank Windhoek, has pledged a joint donation of N$500,000 to the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism. The funds are earmarked to support Namibia’s representation and pavilion at the upcoming COP28 conference scheduled to be held in Dubai, UAE, from November 30 to December 12, 2023.

This marks the second consecutive year of contributions from Capricorn Group and its affiliates towards Namibia’s participation at COP28, underscoring their commitment to global climate initiatives.

Ruan Bestbier, Capricorn Group Head of Sustainability, emphasized the significance of their sponsorship, stating, “Our pivotal sponsorship towards the Namibian Pavilion at COP28 is more than a financial commitment or supporting a climate change event; it is an investment in creating a platform for Namibians to continue engaging with key global stakeholders. This initiative aims to catalyze a deliberate movement to drive collaborative action between the public and private sectors, forging a path towards a more sustainable and resilient Namibian economy and world.”

A selected delegation from Capricorn Group, including representatives from the Capricorn Foundation and Bank Windhoek, will be in attendance at COP28. The group’s participation underscores their dedication to sustainable practices and the provision of financing solutions that benefit stakeholders and support socio-economic development in their operating regions.

Marlize Horn, Executive Officer of the Capricorn Foundation, expressed pride in supporting Namibia’s participation at COP28. She stated, “The Capricorn Foundation, the main driver of Capricorn Group’s CSR initiatives, is proud to support Namibia’s participation at COP28. The Capricorn Foundation has Sustainability as one of its focus areas and championed food security through the launch of the Capricorn Foundation Food Waste Challenge.”

The 2023 COP28 conference in Dubai is the 28th annual United Nations Climate Change Conference since the first UN Climate Agreement in 1992. Governments leverage this platform to agree on policies aimed at limiting global temperature rises and adapting to climate change impacts.

The United Arab Emirates, hosting the conference this year, faces significant climate challenges. As one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, the region grapples with scorching temperatures and rising humidity, impacting the daily lives of its population. Increased costs for electricity and water further underscore the urgency of addressing climate-related issues.
