Grootfontein records 24 Cholera cases since November 2025

The Grootfontein Municipal Council says it is scrambling to contain a fast-spreading Cholera outbreak, yet conditions in the town’s informal settlements remain critical, despite emergency water and sanitation efforts.

Otjozondjupa regional health director, Gebardo Thimoteus, confirmed to NewsOnOne that 24 cholera cases have been laboratory-confirmed without fatalities and no hospitalisation currently, but urges the public to take hygiene precautions as health teams intensify their response.

The town’s mayor Morits Gaingob said the council allocated an emergency budget of N$100 000, now fully depleted, and has approached the health ministry for further assistance.

He says the outbreak is centred on an informal settlement, where thousands of residents lack proper sanitation, warning that the situation could worsen as schools reopen next week.

Gaingob said the town’s outdated sewer system is contributing to the cholera outbreak, but temporary water tanks have been installed and permanent pipelines connected to provide residents with clean running water.
