Iranians to Decide Between Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian and Conservative Saeed Jalili in Presidential Runoff

Iranians will return to the polls today to decide between reformist Masoud Pezeshkian and hard-line conservative Saeed Jalili in a presidential runoff. The initial vote saw no candidate securing a majority. Pezeshkian advocates for improved foreign relations to boost Iran’s economy, while Jalili holds strong anti-Western views. This election follows the death of former president Ebrahim Raisi. This is the country's second presidential runoff in history.

Cape Forum Opposes Potential Appointment of John Hlophe

The Cape Forum strongly opposes the potential appointment of former Western Cape Judge president and MK parliamentary leader, John Hlophe to the Judicial Service Commission. They label the nomination a dishonour to the legal system. They criticise Hlophe's attempts to influence judicial decisions favouring former president Jacob Zuma. The forum’s Heindrich Wyngaard warns that Hlophe's appointment, alongside EFF nominee Julius Malema, could threaten the judiciary’s integrity:
