WHO approves first Mpox vaccine for Africa

The World Health Organization has approved the use of an Mpox vaccine for the first time, which it says should facilitate “timely and increased access” for millions at risk in Africa where the latest outbreak has infected more than 20,000 so far this year. Matt Wells from UN news reports.

Trans Namib’s hydrogen-powered train expected by April 2025

TransNamib has temporarily suspended a project to convert two locomotives to run on hydrogen and diesel using locally produced green hydrogen. This follows the approval of a N$2.6 billion loan from the Development Bank of Namibia and the Development Bank of Southern Africa to help modernise its fleet. SA’s Ramaphosa to address the UN General Assembly later this month

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead South Africa’s delegation at the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York from the 24th to the 30th of this month. The session, presided over by former Cameroonian Prime Minister Philemon Yang, will focus on unity in diversity. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says Ramaphosa will address the summit, focusing on multilateralism, economic diplomacy, and investment.

Drought lowers Fish River Canyon water levels

Namibia Wildlife Resorts will conduct a clean-up at the Fish River Canyon this weekend to mark the end of the hiking season. NWR spokesperson Nelson Ashipala said that drought conditions have lowered water levels, pushing the Ministry of Environment to deploy water marshals to maintain a steady supply.

MVA Fund records youth account for 55% of road accident injuries

The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund has revealed that young people aged 18 to 35 were disproportionately affected by motor vehicle accidents, constituting 55% of total injuries recorded during the first nine months of 2024. MVA Fund CEO, Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, in a media release issued Wednesday, said that the youth further accounted for 50% of total fatalities recorded during the same period. The Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board and Namibia Revenue Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding that allows NamRA to set up an office at the NIPDB, creating a one-stop service center for investors.
