UN voices concern over peacekeeper safety in Lebanon

At least 21 people have been killed in an Israeli air strike in northern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied purposefully targeting peacekeepers in Lebanon but has repeated calls for them to leave combat areas. Richard Gowan is the United Nations Director at the Crisis Group - he says the UN is concerned about its peacekeeping troops.

World Bank cuts Africa growth forecast

The World Bank has downgraded its economic growth forecast for sub-Saharan Africa. Bloomberg reports that Sub-Saharan Africa will likely grow 3% this year, somewhat lower than an April forecast of 3.4%, the Washington-based lender said in its Africa Pulse report published Monday.  The slower growth rate was largely blamed on the conflict in Sudan which started 18 months ago and has continued to escalate.

Seven convicted for Caprivi secession attempt

Seven men convicted in Namibia’s longest-running Caprivi treason trial were sentenced to prison terms of five to 16 years on Monday for attempting to secede from the Zambezi region. The trial involved 132 people charged with 278 offenses, including high treason and murder, related to the Caprivi conflict between 1992 and 2002. A local newspaper reported that the men had already been in custody for more than 20 years.

DRC and Rwanda to implement M23 ceasefire plan

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have agreed to implement activities aimed at ending an armed conflict led by the M23 rebels in the east of the DRC. The foreign ministers of both countries met in the Angolan capital of Luanda and agreed to end the conflict which started in 2021. Chris Ocamringa has more from Kinshasa.
