One third of global population affected by desertification

Some 3.2 billion people, or almost one-third of the global population, are affected by desertification and land loss driven, in part, by climate change, according to the UN’s most senior official dealing with the issue. Ibrahim Thiaw is the Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

Rocket attack kills three in DRC

Two Congolese soldiers and a Romanian mercenary have been killed in a rocket attack in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A Congolese security official says the rocket landed at their military base in North Kivu province over the weekend. Chris Ocamringa has more from Kinshasa.

Zuma’s Mkhonto weSizwe to join opposition alliance

South Africa’s former president, Jacob Zuma, has said his political party - uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) - will join the opposition alliance in parliament. BBC Africa quotes Zuma as saying, it would co-ordinate resistance to the governing coalition led by the African National Congress. Despite this, MK said it maintained that last month's elections were rigged and wanted the results annulled.

He demands Kiev to pull out its troops from the four regions Russia had claimed its own after launching military aggression against Ukraine in 2022. He also wants the West to lift all sanctions implemented against Moscow.

The Greek coastguard has caused the deaths of dozens of migrants in the Mediterranean over three years, witnesses say, including nine who were deliberately thrown into the water.
