Namibian Competition Commission accuses banks of price-fixing

The Namibian Competition Commission has accused the Payments Association of Namibia and several commercial banks of colluding in price-fixing activities related to card transaction fees. According to the Commission, the banks, which are competitors in the market, allegedly colluded with PAN to collectively set interchange fees, a practice deemed anti-competitive and prohibited by law. WHO approves new oral simplified cholera vaccine

World Health Organization's has approved a new oral vaccine for cholera. The oral vaccine for cholera received prequalification by the WHO on 12 April 2024. The inactivated oral vaccine Euvichol-S has a similar efficacy to existing vaccines but a simplified formulation, allowing opportunities to rapidly increase production capacity. An estimated 10bn barrels of oil has been discovered in Namibia, Portuguese oil company Galp Energia has said. Insurance payouts expected for some Southern African drought hit countries

A drought driven by the El Nino weather pattern is likely to trigger insurance payouts to four southern African countries that took out cover with an agency of the African Union. Bloomberg reports that Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique will receive payments at the end of the harvesting season, according to current projections, African Risk Capacity said in a statement but the payments are unlikely to meet regional needs.

Namibia Statistics Agency to release ‘Vital Statistics Report’

The Namibia Statistics Agency will be releasing the Vital Statistics Report, on 24 April 2024 which is on birds, marriages, and deaths 2018-2021. This comes as the country adopted the resolution from the 8th Conference of the African Ministers responsible for Civil registration in 2014 to produce regular statistical reports based on the civil registration data regardless of the level of completeness.
