Namibia begins repatriation of refugees to the DRC

The Home Affairs Ministry, in partnership with UNHCR and the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has begun repatriating refugees. The first group of 49 refugees was repatriated, and the remaining 38 will be repatriated tomorrow to Lubumbashi in the DRC, through Hosea Kutako International Airport, according to Refugee Commissioner Josephine Kampolo.

Education ministry raises compulsory school age

The Ministry of Education has implemented the Basic Education Act of 2020, effective from 5 October, replacing the 2001 Education Act. The new legislation reflects Namibia's commitment to education, notably increasing the compulsory school attendance age from 16 to 18. Deputy Executive Director Edda Bohn says the act also addresses learners' rights to transfer under specific circumstances.

UK Prime Minister opens Global Food Security Summit in London

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has opened a Global Food Security Summit in London. The conference, according to the BBC, is a joint initiative between Britain, Somalia, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as organisations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Representatives from more than 20 countries are attending. Sunak also announced a new virtual hub to link British scientists with global research into climate-resilient crops.
