Hendrik Gaobaeb elected president of United Democratic Front

Sesfontein constituency councilor and Kunene Regional Council chairperson Hendrik Gaobaeb has secured victory to become the new president of the United Democratic Front. He was elected at the party’s elective congress at Swakopmund. Gaobaeb clinched the presidency with 127 votes, surpassing former president Apius !Auchab, who received 77 votes, and vice president Dudu Murorua, who garnered 54 votes. Prince Harry withdraws libel claim against publisher

Lagos bans single-use plastics

Nigeria's Lagos state will start implementing a ban on Styrofoam and other single-use plastics. The State's environment commissioner told the BBC that non-biodegradable plastics were a major pollution problem, and were clogging drains. State officials say they'll use a dormant 2009 law to fine or jail culprits. Lagos is one of Africa's most populous cities. International experts estimate Nigeria generates 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually.

Cholera outbreak spreads across 12 African countries

The World Health Organisation Africa Region says the cholera outbreak has spread to 12 countries on the continent. As of Thursday, ten-thousand-887 cases and 432 deaths were reported across nine of the country’s ten provinces. WHO Africa emergency health officer, Patrick Otim, says the Lusaka district is the epicenter of the outbreak.

Unam addresses admission criteria for grade 11 learners

The University of Namibia says there has been a lot of uncertainty regarding their admission criteria, especially concerning Grade 11 learners and the Advanced Subsidiary level requirements. Unam spokesperson Simon Namesho says their current admission criteria are based on a combination of the NSSCAS as the final school leaving certificate and the NSSCO, which is the norm in countries offering school leaving certificates at different levels.

Search underway after landslide in China’s Yunnan Province

Search and rescue efforts are underway for at least 47 people believed to be buried in a landslide in southwest China’s Yunnan province. More than 500 people have been evacuated from the region, and there are no immediate reports of deaths or injuries. Landslides, often caused by rain or unsafe construction work, are not uncommon in China.

Heavy rains cause devastating floods in Dar es Salaam

Floods have damaged houses and roads and killed an unspecified number of people after heavy rains pounded Tanzania's commercial city of Dar es Salaam for two days. According to the BBC, many houses near rivers were seen collapsed and roads and bridges destroyed, making it difficult to navigate through the city. The Tanzania Meteorological Agency has warned of heavy rains for the rest of this month.
