Botswana’s ruling party promises change ahead of Wednesday’s election

Botswana’s ruling party, the Botswana Democratic Party which has been in power for nearly six decades, is calling for “change” in its campaign ahead of Wednesday’s election—a slogan more typical of opposition groups. According to Bloomberg News, President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who has led since 2018, acknowledged a need for a new approach, though opposition leaders argue the BDP cannot deliver it.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security has announced that the application period for student permits for the 2025 academic year is now open for prospective foreign students who have enrolled or plan to enroll at Namibian educational institutions. Opposition parties in Botswana are putting pressure on the country’s electoral commission. With the country heading to elections on 30 October, the Botswana Congress Party is suing the Independent Electoral Commission over concerns about individuals registering in multiple constituencies. Party president Dumelang Saleshando wants these names removed from the voters' roll.

PDM’s Venaani dismisses Ren-Form lawsuit

Leader of the Popular Democratic Movement, McHenry Venaani says the party will not boycott the upcoming elections, despite recent protests against the awarding of the ballot printing tender to Ren-Form. Venaani has also dismissed Ren-Form CC's legal threat against the party, calling it a bluff and labelling the lawsuit “an empty gesture”.

According to India's meteorological department, a cyclone is expected to make landfall between Thursday and Friday, on India's eastern coast. Flights and train services to and from two of India's eastern states have been suspended as the region braces itself for heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching upto 120kmph.

SA’s Home Affairs Ministry addresses immigration violations

South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has confirmed the cancellation of documents belonging to Chidimma Adetshina's mother. Schreiber told the SABC that Adetshina, now Miss Universe Nigeria, is not guilty of immigration violations, as she was an infant.     Adetshina withdrew from the Miss SA pageant amid scrutiny over her citizenship.
