New Cross-Border Payment Rules for Common Monetary Area

Starting April 15, 2024, the banking sector is implementing changes to cross-border payments within the Common Monetary Area, encompassing Namibia, Eswatini, Lesotho, and South Africa. Cross-border Electronic Fund Transfer payments within the CMA will no longer be allowed through domestic channels. Instead, clients must use the FNB App or FNB Online Banking to initiate Global Payments. Albert Matongela, FNB Namibia Payments Manager, explains further.

Common Monetary Area payments set to change

The banking sector will, as of 15 April 2024, change the way clients make and receive payments between Namibia, Eswatini, Lesotho, and South Africa. After that date all cross-border EFT payments processed and received by clients within the Common Monetary Area will no longer be processed as domestic payments, but will instead be initiated as global, or international payments. Zambezi Governor, Lawrence Sampofu, has called on investors to take advantage of the fertile land available in the region and invest in agriculture and other potential tourism activities.
