Japan braces for Typhoon Ampil

Parts of Japan are bracing for heavy rains and strong winds as Typhoon Ampil nears the country's east coast. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and warnings have been issued for residents in Japan's Kanto region. The typhoon's arrival comes just days after tropical storm Maria brought heavy rains to some northern areas of Japan. Corresponding for us from East Asia is William Denselow.

Hurricane slams into US territory

A major tropical storm has knocked out power for nearly half of Puerto Rico's population, as Hurricane Ernesto barrels through the Caribbean. The US territory was pummelled with torrential rain and strong winds overnight, causing flooding and fears for the safety of the island's 3.2 million people, 40% of whom live under the poverty line. The president of Columbia University has announced her resignation after a little more than a year on the job. For months Minouche Shafik was criticised for the protests at the university's Manhattan campus over the war in Gaza. Shafik tendered her resignation on Wednesday. Jody Jacobs reports.

Unicef says more children will die in Gaza if polio vaccines are not delivered

The United Nations Children's Fund, Unicef says if polio vaccines don't get distributed immediately, children in Gaza will die. 1.2 million doses of the vaccine have been approved by the World Health Organisation following the discovery of poliovirus type 2 in July by the Global Polio Laboratory Network in sewage samples collected in Gaza. South African Grammy Award-winning pop star Tyla's song Jump has been included in former US president Barack Obama’s annual summer playlist. The song has more than 140-million streams on Spotify. Other singers who landed on Obama's playlist include Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em, Billie Eilish’s Chihiro, I Can’t Get No Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones, and Tommy Richman’s Million Dollar Baby. Obama has curated and shared his summer playlist almost every year since 2015.

Former Pakistani jail deputy superintendent arrested over Khan allegations

Authorities have taken former Adiala Jail deputy superintendent Muhammad Akram into custody on charges of abuse of power and providing undue assistance to former Prime Minister Imran Khan during his imprisonment.
