DRC Seeks Chad’s Military Support Against M23 Rebels

The Democratic Republic of Congo, according to Reuters, has formally requested military assistance from Chad to combat the escalating insurgency by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in its eastern provinces. A Chadian official and a source from the Congolese presidency confirmed the request, following a meeting between Congo’s Minister of Regional Integration and Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno on Tuesday.

AU Summit Urges M23 Rebels to Cease Fire in Eastern DRC

The African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government has voiced deep concern over the escalating crisis in eastern DRC. During the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, leaders called on M23 rebels to halt hostilities to prevent further loss of life. This follows reports of Rwandan-backed rebels capturing another town near Bukavu, despite their earlier ceasefire declaration. Heavy fighting continues, with Goma still under M23 rebel control.
