The Blood Transfusion Services celebrated a milstone yesterday by honoring persons who donated blood. At an event held in Windhoek, donors who were awarded certificates as a token of appreciation ranging from 50 to 250 donations and in doing so, saving thousands of lives. The Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia continues to face a severe shortage of blood, with a significant decline in their reserves. To adequately meet the demand for blood in hospitals, NAMBTS needs more than 170 blood donations of various types daily. Titus Shivute, highlighted this pressing need.
The Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia is still currently experiencing a shortage of blood says Supervisor of Marketing and Donor Relations, Titus Shivute, explaining that the country currently only has five days of blood supply banked. According to Shivute, the Service needs “over 170 blood donations daily in order to meet the demand for blood in hospitals”, with 9-12 days of supply banked being ideal.
