Japan protests Chinese ambassador’s Taiwan comments

Japan is protesting comments made by the Chinese ambassador about Taiwan, calling them "extremely inappropriate”. China’s envoy in Tokyo, Wu Jianghao said on Monday, Japan would be ‘dragged into the fire’ if Japanese forces supported Taiwan’s Independence. Chris Gilbert reports for us from Tokyo.

China jails Hokkaido University professor for espionage

The family of a Chinese national being held on espionage charges says a received a jail sentenced from a court in Jilin province. Yuan Keqin was detained in 2019 when he returned to China while holding a post at Japan’s University of Education in Hokkaido. Chris Gilbert has the report for us.

Beijing hits back as US proposes new tariffs on Chinese imports

China has spoken out against a move by the United States to hike tariffs on US$18 billion worth of Chinese imports such as electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminium and medical equipment. China denies Philippine report of “artificial island” in disputed waters

China has denied a Philippine report of trying to build an artificial island in the South China Sea. The Philippine Coast Guard said it had deployed a ship to Sabina Shoal on the Spratly archipelago, where it accused China of building an artificial island and had documented what it said were piles of dead and crushed coral on the sandbars.
