Former President of Congo, Joseph Kabila, has begun discussions with opposition leaders regarding the country’s political future, as Rwanda-backed rebels continue to capture territory in the east, according to five sources speaking to Reuters. The talks, which also include civil society members, could pose a further challenge to President Felix Tshisekedi, who has faced criticism for his handling of the M23 rebels' rapid advance.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, according to Reuters, has formally requested military assistance from Chad to combat the escalating insurgency by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in its eastern provinces. A Chadian official and a source from the Congolese presidency confirmed the request, following a meeting between Congo’s Minister of Regional Integration and Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno on Tuesday.
Residents of Bukavu, eastern Congo’s second-largest city, are assessing the damage after widespread looting followed the arrival of Rwandan-backed M23 rebels according to Reuters. The rebel group, which took control of the city on Sunday, has pledged to restore order. Their capture of Bukavu and its strategic airport in Kavumu marks a major advance, further weakening Kinshasa’s authority and raising concerns of a broader regional war.
The United Nations Security Council on Monday pledged its full support for UN peacekeeping in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as fighting in the DRC intensified in recent days. In a statement, the council says attacks against peacekeepers may constitute war crimes. Six UN peacekeepers have been killed since the fighting with M23 rebels escalated. Southern Africa’s regional bloc, SADC, has extended its troop deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo by another year, continuing efforts to support the government in its fight against rebel groups, according to Reuters. The mission, which began in December 2023, aims to address the ongoing security and humanitarian challenges in the country, a key producer of metals like cobalt and copper.
Two Congolese soldiers and a Romanian mercenary have been killed in a rocket attack in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A Congolese security official says the rocket landed at their military base in North Kivu province over the weekend. Chris Ocamringa has more from Kinshasa.
