Electoral Commission Begins Candidate Training for Local Elections

The Electoral Commission has started training shortlisted candidates for the regional and local authority council elections scheduled for 26 November. The Commission says the sessions will conclude on 15 November and expects full attendance from all trainees, including those who have previously participated in similar programs, ECN spokesperson De Wet Siluka confirmed.

Political Groups Demand Funding for Ballot Oversight

Political parties have expressed frustration over the Electoral Commission’s decision not to pay for their participation in monitoring ballot paper printing in South Africa. Manuel Ngaringombe, secretary general of the Popular Democratic Movement, said the four selected parties should not have to cover their own expenses for such a critical process.  ECN’s spokesperson, De Wet Siluka.

  The Electoral Commission's Chairperson Elsie Nghikembwa reported that /Khomas recorded the highest special voter turnout yesterday, though the process faced issues like ballot shortages, long queues, and delays. The unexpectedly high turnout among security personnel contributed to the shortage. High Voter Registration Numbers Impress Electoral Commission Ahead of November Elections

The Electoral Commission is pleased with the surge in voter registrations for the upcoming national elections on 27 November. ECN Spokesperson De Wet Siluka noted that registration centers nationwide were bustling with activity, reflecting a strong public interest in voting. With yesterday’s registration deadline, the total number of registered voters is anticipated to surpass the 1,315,124, representing 81% of eligible voters.

Voter Registration Hits 1.3 Million Ahead of Deadline

With the General Registration of Voters concluding in three days, the Commission reports that 1,315,124 eligible Namibians have registered, including those abroad, representing 81% of the eligible voter population. Since the GRV began on June 3, 2024, there has been an average of 26,869 new registrations per day from July 22-27, 2024, showing a slight decline from the previous week’s turnout.
