Fighting intensifies in eastern DRC

The United Nations says two rockets landed close to a base of UN peacekeepers during clashes between the M23 rebels and government forces in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday. No casualties were reported among the peacekeepers.

700 dead from Zambia cholera outbreak as cases surge

UN sanctions DRC rebel leaders

The UN has imposed an arms embargo, travel ban and asset freeze against six rebel leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo amid violence in the country's east. According to the BBC, those sanctioned include the military spokesperson of the M23 rebel group, a general in the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda and two senior leaders in the Ugandan armed group Allied Democratic Forces.

South Africa to deploy troops to DRC

South Africa will deploy 2,900 troops to help fight armed groups east of the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of a Southern African Development Community initiative. Reuters reports that the one-year deployment will cover the period between 15 December  2023 and 15 December 2024, and will cost around 2 billion rand. South Africa Deploys 2,900 Troops to Eastern DRC to Address Decades-long Conflicts

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa authorizes the deployment of 2,900 members of the South African National Defense Force to the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The move aims to address decades-long conflicts between rival armed groups over land and resources, resulting in significant casualties and displacements. UN Security Council worried over rising violence in the Congo
