The Ministry of Mines and Energy is hosting a six-day advanced course in Swakopmund on protection and assistance during chemical incidents. Fourie Nhoni, the mines ministry’s Senior Public Relations Officer, says participants from Southern African countries will receive both theoretical and practical training to improve emergency preparedness.

EU and UNICEF Boost Drought Aid to Hard-Hit Areas

The European Union has committed €911,000 (approximately N$19 million) to support emergency drought response through UNICEF, which is also contributing an extra €228,000 (about N$5 million) from its own resources. Since 2018, flash floods have claimed eight lives in Windhoek

  Since 2018, flash floods have claimed eight lives in Windhoek. This week, 87-year-old Theodor Volker lost his life after attempting to drive across a flooded low-lying bridge in Olympia. South Africa’s Rise Mzansi Warns Against Misuse of Public Funds Amid National Disaster Declaration

South Africa's Rise Mzansi has warned against the misuse of public funds following the declaration of foodborne illnesses as a national disaster. These illnesses have already claimed 22 lives with a total of 890 cases reported. Rise Mzansi spokesperson Mabine Seabe has urged Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs minister, Velenkosini Hlabisa, to set up systems that prevent politicians and officials from looting public funds during the disaster:

Typhoon Usagi hits Philippines, tracking towards Taiwan

  Typhoon Usagi has swept through the north of the Philippines and is heading towards Taiwan. Authorities warned the storm could cause widespread flooding and landslides, with Usagi being the fifth typhoon in a month to hit the archipelago nation. Laura Westbrook reports.

Ten Bodies Recovered After Fuel Tanker Explosion in Kampala

A fuel tanker explosion in Kampala, Uganda, resulted in the recovery of ten bodies, according to a Reuters witness. The tanker overturned around 3:00 PM local time in the Kigoogwa suburb, located on the northern outskirts of the city along the road connecting Kampala to Gulu. Police confirmed that several individuals may have lost their lives, and others sustained injuries in the incident.

Kenyan schools reopen after devastating floods

Schools in Kenya have reopened after flooding in the country killed more than 250 people. Kenya and other parts of East Africa have been battered by torrential rains, claiming lives and destroying property.
