Environment Ministry Denounces Illegal Poaching Incident in Mangetti National Park

The Environment, Forestry, and Tourism Ministry strongly condemns the illegal poaching activity discovered within the Mangetti National Park, where three members of the NDF were apprehended with dried game meat from Eland, Kudu, and Wildebeest, lacking the necessary permits. The perpetrators are scheduled to appear in the Rundu Magistrate Court to face charges. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda.

The SA Private Association of Rhino Conservation Reserves demands swift and severe action against government officials implicated in poaching-related crime. This follows the reinstatement of a nature conservation official from North West's Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Mxolisi Stephen, previously charged with alleged poaching offenses. Stephen faces eight charges of alleged rhino dehorning and horn transportation without permits. The association's Glen Phillips calls for accountability:

Scientists study levels of toxic mercury in Antarctic mammals

Marine biologists collect skin samples from humpback whales and leopard seals in Antarctica to detect the presence of mercury in their bodies. The toxic heavy metal is believed to reach the ocean through rivers or rain. According to the UN environmental agency UNEP, if an animal consumes mercury, it may suffer "reproductive failure, behavioural changes and may even (die)."
