Antonio Guterres welcomes ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel

United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Speaking to reporters in New York on Wednesday shortly after the announcement was made, Guterres said the UN stands ready to assist in the implementation of the agreement. Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement, mediated by Qatar, ending 15 months of conflict in Gaza. The deal allows displaced Palestinians to return home and secures the release of hostages taken during Hamas's October 7 attacks. The ceasefire is seen as a diplomatic success for outgoing US President Joseph Biden, while incoming President Donald Trump claims his election win expedited the agreement.

Blinken & Netanyahu discuss capitalising on death of Sinwar

Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken have discussed "the need to capitalize on" the killing of the Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar.
