WHO Investigates Mysterious Illness in DR Congo

Reuters reports indicate that the World Health Organization is investigating two outbreaks of an unknown illness in northwest Democratic Republic of Congo, which have resulted in over 50 deaths in recent weeks. As of February 16, there have been 431 reported cases and 53 fatalities in remote villages across two health zones in Equateur province, according to a WHO bulletin.

UN warns of a health emergency in the DRC

  United Nations humanitarian agencies are warning of a region-wide health emergency following the outbreak of fighting in the city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. While UN agencies report "relative calm" on Wednesday, they say rebel M23 fighters are still in control of "a significant portion of the city". Cholera vaccine push underway in southern Africa

The World Health Organization has warned that cholera cases are increasing globally, and there’s been an unprecedented spike in Africa. Dr. Fiona Braka from WHO’s regional office in Brazzaville, Congo, said that eastern and southern Africa have been badly affected. In just the first four weeks of the year, 10 African countries reported more than 26,000 cases and 700 deaths.

Gaza health system on the brink of collapse

The World Health Organisation says the health system in Gaza is on the brink of collapse. According to a WHO health emergency officer, the organisation needs more aid and medical supplies to assist with the unfolding "catastrophe". Jody Jacobs reports from the United Nations in New York.
