Statistics Agency’s 2025 Financial Inclusion Survey Concludes

The Statistics Agency has wrapped up the 2025 Financial Inclusion Survey, collecting information from 1,960 households across 14 regions with the help of 198 field staff. Results, expected by the end of March 2026, will inform the government and stakeholders in developing inclusive financial policies. NSA spokesperson Iipumbu Sakaria offered additional caution:

In S.A, Financial Stability Review Highlights Growing Strain on Households

S.A's Reserve Bank's latest Financial Stability Review reveals growing financial stress among households and small-to-medium enterprises. High interest rates, ageing global conflicts, infrastructure failures, and South Africa's graylist status contribute to the strain. Reserve Bank’s head of financial stability department Nicola Brink, says non-performing loans surged from 257-billion-rand in March 2023 to 304-billion-rand in July 2024:

Private Sector credit declines in February 2024

Private sector credit extension decreased in February 2024 to 1.7% year-on-year down from 2.4% year-on-year in January 2024 and 3.1% year-on-year in February 2023. The trend reflects a continued slowdown in credit uptake, with growth consistently falling below the six-month moving average. Households were the main contributors to the credit uptake.
