China’s Xi to send top-level envoy to Trump’s inauguration

  Chinese President Xi Jinping will send a high-level envoy in his place to US President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, according to the Financial Times newspaper. Trump had extended the invitation to Xi, but experts said it would have been unprecedented for a leader of China to attend a US presidential inauguration and called it political theater. Rescue efforts under way after earthquake in Tibet

  The search for survivors entered a second day on Wednesday after a strong earthquake killed at least 126 people and damaged more than 3,000 buildings in a remote part of the Chinese region of Tibet, near Everest. Another 188 people were injured after the earthquake hit the foothills of the Himalayas at around 9am local time on Tuesday, according to Chinese state media. Laura Westbrook reports.

South Korea’s Yoon given until Saturday to appear for questioning

South Korean prosecutors on Tuesday told impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol that he has until Saturday to appear for questioning over his failed martial law bid or face possible arrest, according to Yonhap news agency. Yoon, suspended from office by parliament last Saturday, is being investigated over alleged insurrection. Laura Westbrook has more.
