DRC and Rwanda officials to meet in Luanda

Government and military officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda are set to meet in the Angolan capital of Luanda to hash out an agreement that seeks to end the M23 conflict in the east of the DRC. The agreement known as the Luanda Process seeks to end a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced over 2 million people since 2021.

The M23 rebel group has solidified its control over the Rubaya coltan-mining region in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, imposing a production tax that brings in an estimated $300,000 monthly, according to a UN Security Council briefing says Reuters. UN sanctions DRC rebel leaders

The UN has imposed an arms embargo, travel ban and asset freeze against six rebel leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo amid violence in the country's east. According to the BBC, those sanctioned include the military spokesperson of the M23 rebel group, a general in the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda and two senior leaders in the Ugandan armed group Allied Democratic Forces.
